Places to See and Savor Along the Conca River Valley

  • San Giovanni in Marignano, Wheat and Witches (≈ 13 km)
The medieval walls, commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, frame a lively village, whose underground pits, once used as grain reserves, earned it the nickname of "Malatesta's Granary". At the center, the bell tower of Piazza Silvagni leads to cobbled alleys where shops selling local products line the streets. In June, these alleys come alive with floats and allegories during the celebration that has been attracting thousands of visitors for 30 years: The Night of the Witches. Another gem of this village is the Teatro Massari, one of the oldest in the region, and a great example of Italian-style theater, a fantastic opportunity for historical and artistic discovery for the whole family.
  • The Malatesta Fortress of Montefiore Conca (≈ 20 km)
Overlooking the valley, the fortress built by Malatesta da Verucchio is a perfect example of 14th-century defensive architecture: bastions, towers, and large restored internal rooms offer guided tours enriched with legendary stories. Other places of interest include the Church of San Paolo and the small Church of the Hospital, which house priceless religious artworks. From the walkways, there is a spectacular view extending from the Romagna countryside to the Adriatic coast, ideal for admiring the sunset with the children.
  • The Village of Montegridolfo and Suspended Time (≈ 27 km)
Framed by 15th-century walls strengthened by Galeotto Malatesta, the village retains its medieval urban layout: small squares, ancient wells, and noble palaces to admire while walking slowly. The Church of San Rocco houses a magnificent painting by Guido Cagnacci, while the remains of the Church of Sant'Agostino tell the story of the Gothic Line. As you walk along the main street, it’s impossible not to stop at the inns to taste sheep’s cheese and the famous local EVO oil.
  • The Magic of Mondaino's Palio del Daino (≈ 27 km)
A pivotal point of the Malatesta defensive line, this small village proudly preserves its defensive Rocca, from whose terrace you can enjoy a panoramic view, and shows off its well-preserved Porta Marina. However, it’s Piazza Maggiore that makes this village unique, with its semi-circular shape, making it an ideal stage for the amazing falconry show during the Palio del Daino celebration in August, where the town’s districts come back to life through juggling performances and historical reenactments.
